Regexing
Parsers would be useful. Regular Expressions complicate everything, as without having mastered it's like a jukebox lottery. Remember always the lyrics about, that regular expressions are sort of black magic. They are, indeed, but even for a black clothed programmer that does not mean to learn them easy. Automaton theory is one of the most nasty topics in computer science. It's the revenge of computer scientists regarding the maths discipline as a whole. Why? Quite simple. Because operators like +, -, * and / not necessarily mean addition, substraction and so on. In maths their meaning in general is fixed, just is theory of computer science more general, or let's say: it has a broader scope; and then you have to define what summing up two numbers means to the computer. It has no knowledge about, as it doesn't know anything. Less than would be required for being stupid, but it's a machine. And a machine, interpreting streams of text, will always end up the engineer to help this damn thing up.
